The first edition of The Hockey Guys’ 2013 NHL Entry Draft Rankings leads off with Halifax Mooseheads’ Nathan MacKinnon sitting atop the rankings. The Cole Harbour native has been under the 2013 NHL draft spotlight since he was a youngster following in the footsteps of NHL Superstar Sidney Crosby as he attended and excelled as a member of Shattuck St. Mary’s hockey program. MacKinnon is off to a strong start in his draft season posting 18 goals and 30 points lifting his Mooseheads team to an dazzling 16-1-0-1 record. Following closely behind MacKinnon in the rankings is Portland Winterhawks’ Seth Jones, a big poised two-way defenseman who plays a mature game that one would expect of a seasoned NHL veteran. Every year when the annual NHL Entry Draft rolls around debates surface on which player is deserving of the first overall selection. The battle for the 2013 first overall slot should remain as competitive as ever with MacKinnon and Jones, both franchise type of players, going head to head.
The Hockey Guys’ third ranked player for November features rising Finnish star pivot Aleksander Barkov, a player capable of fulfilling his elite potential and becoming a factor in the first overall debate as well. Barkov is a skilled forward playing against men in Finland’s top professional league and his 10 goals and 20 points for Tappara through twenty games places the 17-year-old in top 10 SM-liiga scoring. The sky is the limit for this big Finnish forward as he enters the 2013 NHL Draft as one of the draft class’ youngest entries, only a dozen days removed from being eligible in 2014.
Rounding out The Hockey Guys’ top ten rankings includes one of the draft’s most complete players in Ottawa 67’s forward Sean Monahan (4th), rising QMJHL star Jonathan Drouin (5th), responsible and creative Swede Elias Lindholm (6th), offensively potent Hunter Shinkaruk (7th), big poised offensive defenseman Rasmus Ristoläinen (8th), hard-working forward Curtis Lazar (9th) and Ryan Pulock (10th), an offensive defenseman with a booming slap shot. Each of these skilled players is special in their own right and the list of potential franchise-changing talents continues on well into the depths of the first round.
