Contrary to typical Philadelphia Flyers trends at the draft, they’ve decided to stock up on young defenseman.
With the 41st overall pick and the Flyers only second round pick, the team selected Robert Hagg from Modo Hockey in the Swedish Hockey League. Hagg split time between Modo and their J20 squad. With Modo’s J20 squad, scoring 11 goals and adding 13 assists in 28 games. He also played 27 games with Modo, and had just one assist.
Hagg was given a 1st round grade by TSN, but fell into the Flyers laps well into the second. Sportsnet.com ranked him as their 24th best prospect, and had plenty of good things to say about the 18-year old.
Hagg plays well at both ends of the ice, but mostly makes an impact in the offensive zone. He’s an adept puck-handler and passer, and excels with the puck on his stick. He has a good shot and can be a weapon on the man advantage due to his ability to put the puck on net, or on his teammates’ sticks. Hagg plays with swagger and a confident demeanor, but is sometimes downgraded due to inconsistencies in his game.
You can watch Hagg at the World Junior Championships here, where he scored one goal and one assist in five games.
