NHL Stadium Series: New York Roundup
The New York Rangers set a new regular-season outdoor game record by scoring seven goals in Sunday’s Stadium Series event at Yankee Stadium against the New Jersey Devils. The previous record was set by the Chicago Blackhawks who scored six goals in the 2009 Bridgestone Winter Classic at Wrigley Field.
New York’s four second period goals also set a new record for most-goals scored in a single period during an outdoor NHL game. The Devils scored three goals in the opening period to tie the previous mark set by the Chicago Blackhawks.
The Devils and Rangers combined for five goals in the first period, surpassing the original record of four goals scored in a single period in an outdoor NHL regular-season game held by the Montreal Canadiens and Edmonton Oilers in 2003 and again in 2009 by the Blackhawks and Detroit Red Wings.
The 10 goals scored by both teams combined matched the record set by the Red Wings and Blackhawks in 2009 where Detroit edged Chicago, 6-4.
New York Rangers forward Mats Zuccarello and New Jersey Devils forward Patrik Elias each tallied two goals for their clubs, tying the record for most goals scored in a regular-season NHL outdoor game. The two-goal feat has been accomplished by six other NHLers, including former New York Ranger, Mike Rupp.
“I’ve never been here [Yankee Stadium]and baseball is not that big in Norway. But I’ve lived in the U.S. for quite a while now, so I know it’s pretty special. It’s special for me too coming from Norway, and to be able to play at this rink and get the win too is pretty amazing. So, yea, we were happy about today.”- Mats Zuccarello, New York Rangers
Derek Stepan scored the first outdoor-game penalty shot at 10:06 of the third period, beating Devils’ goalie Corey Schneider to give the Rangers the 7-3 lead.
Kings’ forward Anze Kopitar and former Philadelphia Flyers’ forward Daniel Briere each were awarded penalty shots during their outdoor game appearances, but were unsuccessful in their attempts.
Seven goals in Sunday’s game between the Devils and Rangers were scored by players heading off to Sochi, Russia for this year’s Winter Olympic Games.
Elias, Jaromir Jagr and Marek Zidlicky combined for five points in Sunday’s defeat and will all be representing the Czech Republic next month.
Three Times The Charm:
Devils forward Michael Ryder joined James van Riemsdyk and Ty Conklin for the most career appearances in an outdoor game when he appeared in his third event yesterday.
Ryder played in the 2003 Molson Canadian NHL Heritage Classic as a member of the Canadiens as well as the 2010 Winter Classic at Fenway Park while playing with the Boston Bruins.
Home Team Disadvantage:
In the 10 regular-season outdoor NHL games, eight have been won by the visiting team (8-1-1).
The only home teams to skate away with a victory were the Boston Bruins, who defeated the Philadelphia Flyers in overtime at the 2010 Winter Classic and the Calgary Flames who routed the Canadiens 4-0 in the 2011 Heritage Classic.
